![]() ![]() The Loneliness of Either, Or: A Requiem for Joan of Arc examines the lesser known nuances of Joan’s story, delving into her relationship to gender, prophecy, and faith. Twenty years later, Joan was declared a martyr, and almost 500 years later she was canonized by the same Catholic Church that convicted her and sentenced her to death. Part concert and part mass, this evening of song and pageantry will explore the story of Joan of Arc, the 19 year old woman who was burned at the stake in 1431 for refusing to wear women’s clothing. A distinguished ensemble of artists portray the diva’s fellow travelers on the river boat to Manaus, including soprano Gabriella Reyes as the journalist Rosalba, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the ship’s captain, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his enigmatic first mate, tenor Mario Chang as the captain’s nephew Arcadio, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as the feuding couple Paula and Alvaro.į/event-detail.php?id=528 The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage. Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera tells the enchanting story of an opera diva who returns to her native South America to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus-and to search for her lost lover, who has vanished into the jungle. On top of that, it's one of my most favorite musicals, so there's /season/2023-24-season/florencia-en-el-amazonas/ Very, very few movies using CGI have come close to this level of precision and realism. "You need blood and he's got more than enough." - You can see the veins popping from Seymour's neck, and the lip-syncing of Audrey II is flawless. ![]() "YEAH! Smacking her around and always talking so tough!" The most spectacular representation of this is during the scene where Audrey II is convincing Seymour that Steve Martin (Scrivello) has to die.ĭuring the dialog "He's so nasty treating her rough." I know they would film scenes at half speed, so the singers (basically, Rick Moranis) had to sing at half-speed to match the footage, which was then sped up in post so that Audrey II could talk so quickly. I can't believe, even today, how well the effects hold up. This is such a fantastic special effects accomplishment. Even now, I'm so happy that it's available. I never found a copy, so getting the blu-ray release was a no-brainer for me the very SECOND I learned it was getting released. It was more heartbreaking to me than even the time I loaned my DVD of "This is Spinal Tap" with the commentary by Spinal Tap. I remember spending 5 weeks going to every store I could get to within 100 miles in search of a copy still on the shelf somewhere. 2000? 2001? However, it was recalled rather quickly. This version was actually released on DVD back in. Yes, I recall that it was a "kitchen sink recut". When he removed that, he ended up having to remove and reshoot things that tied into Seymour's headspace from that scene.Įither way, I'm super excited for this release! I also wonder if he'd be willing to restore the full "Meek Shall Inherit" number. I wonder now that the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink version has been widely available if Oz will recut it to how he originally approved it. The version of that scene shown to test audiences was way shorter and paced better. I absolutely agree, though the Blu-ray version of the "Don't Feed the Plants" finale is actually an assembly cut where they just threw in everything shot for it as a treat for the fans. I feel the longer ending halts the whole movie in its tracks. ![]() It's just that the pace of the movie is much, much better in the theatrical cut. The original stage production ended similarly as well, so it's more true to the "source material". I think the 'original' ending is freaking awesome, due to all the work put into it. ![]()
